Alfresco Weslaco Literacy Project
On the third Thursday of every month from September through February the city of Weslaco hosts a street festal called Alfresco Weslaco. For two to three blocks the main street is closed off to vehicle traffic and taken over by food booths, vendors, and entertainment. Epsilon Phi members man a booth every month that puts books into the hands of children from pre-kinder through high school. The purpose of the project is to improve literacy in the valley by helping families build home libraries. Children stopping by the booth are asked to nominate their teacher for teacher of the month. Each month a primary, elementary, and secondary teacher is chosen to be teacher of the month. The teachers selected receive a certificate and gift bag of teaching supplies. All nomination forms are sent out to the teachers so they can know how loved they are by their students.
